"Gliding Home" Original Canada Geese Wildlife Painting by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

This wildlife painting is of Canada geese behind my old studio.  During the winter season, the field behind my fine art studio was full of Canada geese, eating and resting in the sun. Around sunset, they would lift off in small groups and fly down to the Gunnison River for the night. I will never get tired of watching birds! I have had two clients request oversized, gallery wrapped gicleés of this painting (40×60). They are fabulous!

"The End of Davis Gulch" Original Lake Powell Landscape Painting by Nancee Jean Busse Painter of the American West

Lake Powell is a magically beautiful place. The Glen Canyon dam was completed in 1966 in spite of the impassioned protests of environmentalists, naturalists, historians, and archeologists. There is still much controversy, and it is estimated that approximately 8% of the Colorado River’s water is lost due to evaporation and seepage from Lake Powell. Lake Powell is a popular recreation and houseboating destination now. My husband and I went to Lake Powell in 2008. We floated into the silent canyons on glassy, still water, thinking of what was beneath us. The skies were crystal clear and the night sky was black and filled with stars that were reflected on the still water. Davis Gulch is one of the hundreds of canyons in Lake Powell. This was where the final sighting of Everett Reuss took place in 1934.

"County Fair" Original Colorful Fairgrounds Colorado Landscape Painting by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

"Working The Release Pen" Original Western Landscape Painting by Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

A few years ago I was given permission to photograph the sheep handlers working the release pen at the Meeker International Sheepdog Trials. It was fascinating! I watched as the border collies and cowboys and horses wrangled the unruly Meeker sheep, gathering them, penning them, and releasing them for each sheepdog participating in the trials. Working the Release Pen won the People’s Choice award at the 2006 Meeker Classic International Art Contest.

Original Pastel Colorado Landscape Painting "The Meadow by Lou's" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

My sister lives at the other end of the valley from me. Her views are beautifully pastoral and her home looks across this gorgeous meadow. It’s lovely in all seasons. In the winter it fills with Canada geese, in the spring it turns a magnificent chartreuse as the field begins to grow. This piece was painted in the middle of June, when the valley seems to sing with happiness!

Original Horse and Cowboy Painting "Trust" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

It was a long winter. My beloved Dad died, after a difficult final battle. The weather was atypically cold and dreary. The eldercare for both of my parents was, at times, exhausting. During that time, I would look through my photo library for inspiration; any kind of inspiration. I did find inspiration there, in old photos of more lighthearted times, photos of our children when they were young and carefree, bucolic summer vacations, and photos of the wildlife I love so much. There was one particular photo, though, that stood out and I knew it was time to paint my version of it. The photograph depicted an old hand and his horse, at the end of a hard day. Both were weary and ready for rest. The long light of late afternoon shafted across a meadow and illuminated both of them in soft, bright warmth. Their quiet, trusting relationship was evident. At the end of a long, hard day, they had each other.

"Under The Surface" Original Still Life Floral Painting by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

I belong to local CSA. When we pick up our weekly allotment of produce, sometimes we are allowed to pick a bouquet of flowers from an unruly patch of Colorado wildflowers. I gathered this armful of blooms, brought them home, and placed them in a plain glass vase and put them on my windowsill. I loved them! The star of the show for me, though, was how beautiful and delicate the stems under the water’s surface looked. The background is a series of glazes, all whites, off-whites, beiges, pale pinks, and browns. The flowers are, well… flowers. This painting received an honorable mention in the Artist’s Magazine annual competition: 7800 entries–18 winners. Even though the original sold fairly quickly, the prints are wonderful!

Native American Art,Whimsical Wildlife Coyote Painting "Coyote Spills The Stars" by Painter of the American West Nancee Jean Busse

Fresh Off The Easel.... I’m currently completing a series of 6 paintings based on Native American legends. This painting is based on the legend: Coyote Spills the Stars. Here’s my retelling:

In the days of the earth’s beginning, when all creatures came up from the underworld, the Great Mother planned a sacred gathering. In preparation, she filled a jar with a countless number of stars. She selected a human being to carry the jar and place the stars neatly and carefully into the sky.

Coyote was fascinated with the jar and couldn’t keep away. The Great Mother, knowing how full of mischief he was, admonished, “Stay away from that jar!”

Coyote being Coyote, he waited until everyone was distracted with the festivities and crept closer and closer. He lifted the lid, just a bit, to take a little peek. When he looked inside, he was so astonished at the twirling, spinning, magical orbs of light that he accidentally knocked the jar over.

At first nothing happened and all of the stars stayed inside the jar. Coyote was so relieved! As he hurried to get the lid back onto the jar, it began to pulse, and then hum, and then glow! He was still hurrying, hurrying, when a few stars escaped from the jar and floated gently heavenward. Then the stars began to tumble out, faster and faster, until they were flying out of the jar by the millions, all shooting into the sky!

All of the creatures at the gathering were astonished. The Great Mother was astonished. They watched as the stars shot crazily into the sky in a disordered, chaotic dance!

And this is the reason the stars shimmer and glow with no order or pattern; some here, some there. And why Coyote still lifts his face toward the sky each night and howls with laughter.
