Original Colorado Landscape Painting With Horse, Rider Sheep and Dog , "High Country" by Painter of the American West Nancee Jean Busse

I love painting the Meeker Sheepdog Trials. At the far end of the competition field the sheep wranglers release the sheep at the beginning of each run. That’s what this painting depicts. I love the colors of northern Colorado in autumn; brilliant sun on yellow fields, blue mountains, clear skies… Colorado at it’s most rare and beautiful!

Western Landscape Painting, Mountains, Stormy Sky, "VALKYRIE" Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

My husband and I cross from Grand Junction, Colorado to Prescott, Arizona several times a year. It's so beautiful and wide open in the desert! We watched this amazing storm cell march across the wide desert with open mouths. It was full of dark and light clouds, rain, rainbows, whirlwinds, and lightening! What a storm cell bonanza! I've wanted to paint it for a few years, but doubted that I'd be able to do it with acrylic paint. I could glaze and scumble to my heart's content and still not say what I wanted to say. So I resurrected my oils and had at it. The wild and singular force of this beautiful cell reminded me of a Valkyrie; beautiful, powerful, and merciless.

Western Landscape Painting, Colorado Landscape "ODD LIGHT" Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Western landscapes are suffused with light; light from different angles, light filtered by particulates, light obscured by quickly moving clouds. When I looked at this landscape I was enamored by the juxtaposition of greenish sky and red rock and soil. Every color seemed to be bouncing off of something else. Oh joy!

Original Western Landscape,Equine, Cowboy Painting "Day's End" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

This has been my year of painting the things that fill my soul with loveliness and beauty. The photo reference I used for this painting is one I took up in Kalispell a few years ago. It WAS the end of a long June day, and everyone was tired and ready to go home and call it a day. As the sun was setting and the hands were chatting quietly, these two horses reached out to one another with a nuzzle, and nickered softly. It was all perfectly beautiful.

This painting won third place in 2-D art at the Women Artists of the West show “WAOWed in San Diego." 44th Annual Women Artists of the West National Juried Exhibition at the Women’s Museum of California, San Diego, CA. May 2 – May 31, 2014.
