Contemporary Abstract Bird Painting "Raven Totem 2" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Raven Totem 2, Acrylic on Canvas mounted on Gatorboard, 40x30. This is my second big raven totem painting. I began the first as a way to use up old paint on my palette and scraps of linen that I didn't feel like stretching. I fell in love with allowing myself to paint with more imagination and zero stress. These paintings don't have to look like anything other than what they are. Plus, for me, Raven has powerful magic.

Still Life Floral Painting,Flower Art "Radiant Orchid-2" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse,

It's spring! I wanted to paint flowers; just for the joy of painting color. And just for fun, I wanted to use the Pantone Color of the Year for 2015: Radiant Orchid. I loved the color and loved the idea of incorporating such a rich, vibrant shade into a still life.

Contemporary Abstract Bird Painting "Bird Totem 1" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

I was painting bird after bird for an upcoming show with a sandhill crane theme and needed a break! I staple-gunned a piece of canvas on to the back of bookcase in my studio and began painting freely. It makes sense that a bird emerged; after all, that's what I had been painting for months. But what also emerged was pure, delightful color. The blues of the sky, the yellows of sunshine, the reds of heart's blood, and violet-y purples of night sky. ALL birds have a totemic quality for me, but this one, part raven, part harpy, and part serpent is a good reminder to look up, be happy, and remember that the world is full of color and the sky full of life.

The high desert of western Colorado is beautiful! Meeker, Colorado hosts an impressive annual event; the Meeker International Sheepdog Trials. Raven Bird Art Painting "Violet" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

This is a portrait of one of my favorite ravens. We've had a pair hanging around the house for years. In the spring of 2013 our pair had a very successful reproductive season. They showed up in May with 5 fledglings!! One of the fledglings was bolder, more curious, and more raucous than the rest of the brood. All summer she visited me in my studio daily. I named her Violet. By the end of September, all of the fledglings were gone and we were back to our usual pair. I hope Violet is fine and doing well.
